GOING HI-TECH: The fully assembled pump unit of the Devadula LI project.
HYDERABAD: The first pumpset meant for the Godavari (Chokka Rao) lift irrigation project, made by Ebara Company of Japan, at its manufacturing facility at Haneda near Tokyo, is ready. It is being shipped to the State on Thursday. The pump, which runs on 8.5 MW of power, will be installed after arrival in a few days at the project's headworks at Gangaram on Godavari banks in Warangal district. It will lift the river water to a height of 130 metres as planned under the first phase of the Rs. 930-crore project, which will irrigate four lakh acres in six Telangana districts.
Climbing heights
The second pump of the same capacity is also being made. Eabara, the Japanese giant in pumps with a turnover of Rs. 22,500 crores per annum, will also make the rest of the four pumps for the project, each to run on 5 MW. Of them, two will be erected each at Nagaram and Dharmasagaram to further lift the waters to a height of 50 metres. This implies that the Godavari waters will "climb" to a total height of 540 ft under the two phases. The six pumps are worth Rs. 130 crores. The Major Irrigation Minister, P. Lakshmaiah, cleared the first pump after its trial run and other aspects during his visit to Japan along with B. Rajasekhar, and R. K. Srivastava, directors, Godavari Basin and representatives of Kirloskar Brothers, Pune, the contractors of the project. The Ebara chairman, Yukio Shiozawa, was present. On his return here on Tuesday, the Minister said, all the pumps would reach the project site by September. He said Rs. 110 crores had been given to the APTransco to complete the works relating to power supply for the scheme. The pipeline laying works were in full swing. Central officials are expected to visit the site on July 3 to give forest clearance for a 38-km stretch.
