Community college in Karaikal

The community college will offer six months and one-year programmes in computer, repairing of electrical appliances, boat and engine repair.

KARAIKAL: The Restoration of Tsunami Affected Communities in Karaikal (Restack), formed jointly by three NGOs — the Centre for Education of Development Alternatives (CEDA), Dindigul, Village Reconstruction and Development Project (VRDP), Salem and People Organisation and People Education (POPE), Dindigul — started a community college on Tuesday for the benefit of the students in the tsunami-affected areas in Karaikal region.

The NGOs have adopted 15 tsunami-hit villages, including Keezhavanchur, Mthagadi, Keezhayur, Vadakkutheru, Lingathadi, Iyyanarkovilpet, Thiruvattakudipet, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, MGR Nagar and Kattapillaimaricar Thottam in Karaikal region, and have been carrying out relief and rehabilitation activities like formation of women self-help groups, land reclamation programme, permanent housing projects, water and sanitation, veterinary camps, etc.

The community college will offer six months and one-year programmes in computer, nursing assistant, tailoring, repairing of electrical appliances, boat and engine repair.

Mohammad Mansoor, Deputy Collector, Karaikal, inaugurated the community college.

A. Renganathan, Director of VRDP, Antonysamy, Director of CEDA Trust and Sahayaraj, Director of POPE, explained the activities of the NGOs and their rehabilitation measures undertaken for the tsunami-affected people in the Union Territory of Pondicherry and in Tamil Nadu.
