PUDUKOTTAI: With the self-help group members already having ventured into some kind of business activity, the district administration is now engaged in the process of identifying new and profitable trades for the groups, which will go a long way in their economic uplift, the Collector R. Thiagarajan said. Disbursing loans to the tune of Rs.1.11 crores to 119 SHGs, comprising 2,000 members, on behalf of Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) at a function held here recently, the Collector said that the district administration had planned to impart necessary training to the group members to enable them venture into new trades. Noting that the savings habit had increased among the group members, Mr. Thiagarajan said that the total savings of SHGs in the district was Rs.17.86 crores. The group members in the district had obtained loans to the tune of Rs.77.57 crores. A total of 5,538 SHGs had been established in the district and loans to the tune of Rs.6.52 crore had been disbursed to 2,351 groups, benefiting 38,987 families. The IOB, General Manager, V. Gomathinayagam, District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Project Officer, M. Madasamy, bankers and officials from various departments participated.
