Career opportunities for students graduating in life sciences such as Bioinformatics, Biotechnology and Microbiology in Singapore, were elaborated recently at a function organised at the Thanthai Hans Roever College in Perambalur. A day-long seminar on functional genomics of malarial parasites organised by the Life Science department of the college threw light in to various concepts concerned with the Plasmodium Falciparum. In their sessions, head of the department of Bio-informatics, R. Stephen and Amaldoss Anburaj, faculty of Biological Sciences, Nan Yang Technological University explained the fundamental concept of malarial parasite genome and gave a picture of its life cycle and habitat. He spoke on the minimum qualifications required for candidates seeking a career in life sciences at Singapore. The scope for a post-graduate course in the Nan Yang Technological University and the preparations that needed to be made to go abroad were all discussed further in detail. A special lecture session was organised under the auspices of the Linnaeus Club of Botany of J. J. College of Arts and Science, Pudukottai for the benefit of the post graduate students of Botany, Microbiology and Biochemistry. The Working Plan Officer of the Forest Department at Tiruchi, Manoj Kumar Sarkar, delivered a special lecture on `Plant protection strategies for protecting most endangered plant species' on the occasion. Dr. Sarkar explained about the medicinal values possessed by the endangered species like Hildegardia Populifolia, Eugenia singampattiana, Bentinckia Condompona, Janakia arayayalpathra, Kingeodendron Pinnatum, Antiaris Toxicaria and Gymmena Sylvestre, which were currently recorded in Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (KMTR) in Tirunelveli district. He stressed the need for protecting these plants through plant-tissue culture practices.In the second lecture that followed, he narrated about some of the existing Wildlife Protection Acts.
