Abducted girl rescued
Police said Gopi (27) and Ramakrishnan of Suththamalli started a clay company at Koththankulam near Gopalasamudhram some years ago. As the unit suffered losses, it was leased out to some other person last year. In this context, Gopi asked Mr. Ramakrishnan to pay him Rs. 5 lakh as he had suffered heavy loss in business. When he refused, Gopi and his friend, R. Perumal alias Siva Perumal (31) of Kondaanagaram under Suththamalli police station limits, allegedly kidnapped R. Bhavani (16), daughter of Ramakrishnan's younger brother, late Raman, in a car. The duo contacted Bhavani's mother, R. Mahalakshmi (38), over phone and demanded Rs. 5 lakh as ransom to release the girl, a standard XI student. Based on a complaint with Thazhaiyuththu police by Ms. Mahalakshmi, the police was alerted and all check-posts in Tirunelveli and in neighbouring districts were put on alert. When the culprits contacted the mother again, they were asked to come to a particular point to collect the ransom, where they were trapped within three hours of the incident.
Sanitation programme
Inaugurating a two-day seminar on Sampoorna Gramin Rozgar Yojana here on Tuesday, he said that the entire official machinery had been geared up for successful implementation of the sanitation programme. As of now, the implementation rate in construction of individual, school and anganwadi toilets was 92 per cent. The Collector said that 25 very poor families would be selected from each of the 99 panchayats in the district and provided with remedial measures including food and medical security, repair and reconstruction of their houses under Tamil Nadu Empowerment and Poverty Reduction Project. Steps had been taken to expedite distribution of various welfare measures like old age pension and stipend for physically challenged persons. A sum of Rs. 16 crores was being spent for construction of houses, implementation of poverty alleviation programmes, food-for-work schemes and sanitation programmes, said Mr.Paliwal.
