The duo contacted Bhavani's mother, R. Mahalakshmi (38), over phone and demanded Rs. 5 lakh as ransom to release the girl, a standard XI student.

Based on a complaint with Thazhaiyuththu police by Ms. Mahalakshmi, the police was alerted and all check-posts in Tirunelveli and in neighbouring districts were put on alert. When the culprits contacted the mother again, they were asked to come to a particular point to collect the ransom, where they were trapped within three hours of the incident.
