TIRUNELVELI: Alleging that the head of a women self-help group here had swindled over Rs.1 lakh, its members gave a petition to the District Revenue Officer, G. Loganathan, seeking action against the animator, who went underground after misappropriation of funds was detected. Roja Self-Help Group of Keezhanaththam near Palayamkottai came into existence in 2001 with Anthonyammal Rajaiah as its president and Rukmani as the secretary. All its 20 members paid Rs.55 every month to be remitted in the savings account of the group in Pandyan Grama Bank, Palayamkottai. When the members wanted Rs. 20,000 as loan in the third quarter of 2003, the PGB officials released the advance immediately, as repayment of loans availed by SHGs across the district was excellent. As the loan was repaid within the stipulated period, the bank gave a loan of Rs. 1 lakh, which was divided among the members. "Though we promptly repaid the loan with interest through our leader every month, she failed to deposit the amount in the bank. When the matter surfaced, we asked Anthonyammal Rajaiah about discrepancy in our account but she refused to reply properly. So, we went to the bank only to find that the account had just Rs. 171," Ms. Rukmani said. Demanding appropriate action against Mrs. Anthonyammal Rajaiah and recovery of money, the members submitted a petition to the DRO who redirected it to the police for enquiry and further action.
