Move to improve drinking water supply in Nellai

The Tirunelveli Corporation is implementing many schemes including two major projects at an outlay Rs. 11.65 crores to improve supply of drinking water to its residents.

TIRUNELVELI: In an attempt to improve supply of protected drinking water to its residents, the Corporation is implementing a good number of schemes including two major projects at an outlay Rs. 11.65 crores.

If the ongoing projects were completed as per schedule, the Corporation would be the first civic body in the State to supply adequate water to its residents.

According to the Commissioner, D. Chandrasekaran, vigorous efforts were on to ensure supply of adequate quantity of water - 110 litres a day per head as prescribed by the Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board.

In a bid to augment supply of drinking water, work on the Rs. 5.94-crore Thatchanallur Drinking Water Scheme would be started in July while the work on the Rs. 3.78-crore KTC Nagar-V.M. Chathram Drinking Water Scheme would be completed before the end of this year.

"The 22,000-odd population in KTC Nagar, V.M. Chathram and surrounding areas would get drinking water supply from this scheme from the New Year and works on Thatchanallur drinking water scheme would be completed by March 2006," Mr. Chandrasekaran assured.

Since more than 60 per cent of beneficiaries of KTC Nagar project is people from below poverty line families, the Tamil Nadu Urban Development Fund, which is funding the scheme, has come forward to give a 30 per cent subsidy of Rs. 1.13 crore. Of this subsidy, the TNUDF has released Rs. 62.68 lakhs in two instalments and this amount has been handed over to the TWAD Board, which implements the project.

Moreover, Jothipuram, Rajendra Nagar, Krishnan Kovil Street, Melapalayam Beedi Labourers Colony, Rajagopalapuram, Anbu Nagar, Kaarunya Nagar, Thaai Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, Vellakoil, Kokkirakulam, Tholkaappiyar Street, Karaiyiruppu, Azhaganeri, Manipuram, Bharathiyar Street, VOC Street and Vedathri Nagar would get improved supply of drinking water as the works at an outlay of Rs. 64 lakh was nearing completion.

"Besides reinforcing the distribution system within the city limits, we are strengthening drinking water sources. Two new filter-wells, equipped with new powerful submersible pumps, are to be constructed at the existing pumping station at Manappadaiveedu at a cost of Rs. 22.51 lakh each. Finalisation of tender for this project is to be taken up shortly," he added.
