Motivating students to converse in English

A five-day intensive session in spoken English, `Take off with spoken English,' organised by the Department of English, Holy Cross College, Nagercoil, recently evoked good response.

The programme was organised to bridge the gap between school and college education — to train students in articulation, effective communication, reading, recitation and public speech, said Margaret Ranjit.

Games and audio-visual aids were used to make the process of learning English effective and enjoyable. The purpose was to instil confidence in students and motivate them to converse in English. Awareness of the importance of spoken English was also created, said the programme coordinator, Premalatha Dinakarlal.

A students' chapter of Computer Society of India was inaugurated on National Engineering College premises at Kovilpatti for 2005-06 recently.

A. Murugan, senior engineer, Harman Beghar Automative Systems, Michigan, United States of America, asked the students to use the chapter as a platform to develop their communication and organisational skills.

He asked them to present their innovative ideas as papers at CSI chapter meetings.

K. G. Srinivasagan, student counsellor of the chapter, said various activities such as aptitude tests, workshops, intra-college symposium and computer awareness programmes for students from rural areas would be part of the action plan of the chapter for the year.

K.S.K. Chockalingam, principal, NEC, was present.

In order to encourage rural students of Radhapuram union, who have scored high marks in the Plus Two and SSLC examinations, the chairman of Arulmigu Pannirupidi Ayyan College of Arts and Science, Nanguneri, R. Paneer Selvam, recently distributed a sum of Rs. 40,000 to five students of NVC Government Higher Secondary School, Radhapuram.

At a function organised in the school recently, Aavudaiyammal and Valli, the girls who secured State first and second ranks in shorthand examination in the Plus Two examinations received Rs.15,000 and Rs.10,000 respectively.

Two students, who shared school first rank in the Plus Two examination and the school's topper in SSLC received Rs. 5,000 each. On behalf of Mr. Panneerselvam, the principal of Arulmigu Pannirupidi Ayyan College of Arts and Science, P. Peer Mohammed, handed over the cash award.

To make first year students, particularly those admitted through management quota in B.E. and B.Tech programmes fit for facing a stiff competition, R.V.S. College of Engineering and Technology in Dindigul conducted a unique orientation programme. The main aim was to make candidates with low profile on par with others.

It was an occasion to recall the fond and joyful memories of about 25 years ago. When 30 persons, who studied B.Com. during 1977-1980 at Alagappa College, met at a marriage function recently, some could not identify their beloved friends. But they identified each other by recalling unforgettable memories.

D. Sivaprakasam, Head, Department of Commerce, who was their lecturer in 1975, said it was a happy and memorable reunion of students. One should be fortunate enough to meet each other after 25 years. This set of students was considered to be the best batch. It is good to see my students as professors, lecturers, teachers, bank officials, and businessmen.

And finally they disbursed, of course temporarily, after a tasty Chettinad meal — another factor to be cherished.
