PONDICHERRY: The convenor of the Movement for protection of rights of Adi Dravidars of Pondicherry origin, K. Deivanayagam, has refuted the `disparaging comments' the founder of the Puduchery Munnetra Congress (PMC), P. Kannan, has made against the movement and its volunteers on Tuesday. (Mr. Kannan had said that the movement by its dharna on June 20 had caused law and order problems in Pondicherry and expressed surprise over the Lt. Governor not taking steps to prevent `riotous incidents' during a demonstration at the Secretariat that day). Refuting the charge that the participants in the demonstration had been brought to cause a law and order problem Mr. Deivanayagam said that this was an insult to the Adi Dravidar community of Pondicherry. The June 20 demonstration was meant to urge the authorities official machinery to bring out a government order giving shape to the contents of a resolution adopted a few months ago in the Assembly regarding a plea of the local Adi Dravidars. The demonstration did not cause a law and order problem. The demonstration was later suspended following an assurance from the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, that the grievance of local dalits would be looked into and resolved settled amicably. The leader of the Dalit Panthers of India (Pondicherry unit), E. Thalayari, said that Mr. Kannan's comments against the demonstration deserved to be condemned.
