Rasta roko, dharna staged before Gandhi statue on Trunk Road in Nellore

NELLORE: Functionaries of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a rasta roko and observed dharna before Gandhi statue centre, Trunk Road, Nellore, on Thursday, demanding rollback of earlier prices of petroleum products. Led by party State General Secretary, K. Balakondaiah and others, the functionaries came in bullock carts, raising slogans against the Centre and State Governments. The procession, which went through main streets of the town, was joined by several others on the way to the venue.

Addressing the gathering, the party leaders heavily came down on the Centre and State Governments for their arbitrary hike in petroleum prices and said the hasty decision would severely affect the common and middle-class people.

Dies of heart attack

Meanwhille, at Sullurpet, I. Bhaktavastalam, (65), district secretary of Telugu Desam Party (TDP), who was participating in a dharna against the hike in petroleum prices, collapsed following a heart attack. His end came even as he was being rushed to the hospital. The district president of the Party, S. Chandramohan Reddy, and other leaders visited Sullurpet and paid tributes to the departed functionary.

TDP's novel protest

Anantapur staff reporter writes: The Anantapur district unit of the TDP staged a novel protest against the hike in petrol and diesel prices by taking out a bicycle rally and carrying two-wheelers on a cycle rickshaw. The party leaders alleged that the Congress-led Government had burdened the poor and middle-class four times in 14 months of its rule so far. As many as 100 TDP activists and leaders commenced the bicycle rally at the party office and concluded at the same venue after covering the main streets and circles in the district headquarters.

The district president of the party, V. Hanumantharaya Chowdary, and the party leaders -- P. Raghunatha Reddy and K.M. Saifullah -- led the protest.
