THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has, with the concurrence of the Chief Justice of the High Court, decided to allow the Presiding Officers of the Fast Track Courts functioning in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Kasaragod to exercise the powers conferred on them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. — Staff Reporter

Minister's assurance

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Health Minister K.K. Ramachandran Nair has denied reports that the Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam dental colleges will lose recognition.

Thiruvananthapuram Dental College, he said, continues to have recognition. The new dental college in Kottayam has received recognition for four years. There is no hindrance to admitting students at both the colleges, he added. — Special Correspondent

CAP venue shifted

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The venue for this year's Centralised Allotment Process to professional colleges has been shifted to the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram. A press note issued here on Wednesday said the CAP in Thiruvananthapuram would be held at the indoor stadium at the college. Candidates should report for counselling as per the published schedule for the same. — Staff Reporter

Ban orders

KOZHIKODE: To counter the threats by CPI(M) feeder organisations to block the counselling process for admission to professional colleges, ban orders have been clamped around the Institute of Management in Government (IMG) on Kozhikode Medical College campus where counselling is scheduled to begin on July 1. The prohibitory orders would be in force for one week from 4p.m. on Friday. The order was provoked by threats issued by the Students Federation of India (SFI) to block the counselling process in the three centres - Kozhikode, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. — Special Correspondent

Painkulam award

Thrissur: Writer Killimangalam Vasudevan Namboodiripad has been selected for the Painkulam Rama Chakyar Memorial Award for 2005. The award, instituted by Painkulam Rama Chakyar Memorial Kalapeetam, comprises a purse of Rs. 5,000, citation and statuette. The award will be presented in August. The Kalapeetam will also confer the title, Panivada Ratnam, on the Mizhavu exponent Kalamandalam Eswaranunni on the occasion, says a press release. — Staff Reporter

Reward for KSEB employees

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is rewarding all its employees for their contribution to the institution's good performance in the recent years. The KSEB will be spending Rs.1 crore for this, a statement issued on behalf of Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed said on Wednesday. The Malabar Cancer Centre at Thalasserry, functioning under the Power Department, will also get Rs.1 crores from the KSEB. The sum is meant for buying modern medical equipment for the hospital.

The KSEB received an incentive of Rs.64.94 crores from the Union Government recently for its achievements in 2002-03 in improving efficiency and bringing down transmission and distribution loss. — Special Correspondent

Indefinite fast planned

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Employees of the KSRTC, owing allegiance to the KSRTEA, have decided to launch an indefinite fast before the Secretariat on July 7 to press their various demands.

The decision has been taken as there is no response to the 15-day-old satyagraha by KSRTC staff before the Transport Minister's official residence here, a KSRTEA release said. — Special Correspondent

Leadership training camp at Pandalam

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Art of Living Foundation will organise a 10-day leadership training camp for youth at the Art of Living Centre in Pandalam from July 8 to 17, according to its foundation leaders. — Staff Reporter

Construction work on

KOLLAM: Convener of the Mermaid Construction Committee G. Natarajan has said that the work on the construction of a mermaid at the Gandhi Park on Kollam Beach has not come to a standstill.

Mr. Natarajan said that work under the supervision of sculptor Chavara Vijayan was being carried out, which would be over by August 31.

He said that the mermaid sculpture would be formally inaugurated during Onam. Mr. Natarajan also said that failure on the part of the Kollam Municipal Corporation to release the funds in time was the cause of the delay in completing the sculpture. — Staff Reporter

Death anniversary of Ponkunnam Varkey

KOTTAYAM: The first death anniversary of Ponkunnam Varkey will be observed on Saturday, president of Navalokam Culture Center V.N. Vasavan has said. The function will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. Social critic Sukumar Azhikode will be felicitated. A life sketch of Ponkunnam Varkey `Nishedhiyude Sangeerthanangal,' penned by V. ALAPPUZHA: The Akhila Kerala Dheevara Sabha State president V Dinakaran has demanded that the State Government withdraw the permission given to mine mineral sand from Arattupuzha, Thrikkunnappuzha and Purakkad panchayats in the district. At a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr Dinakaran warned of strong resistance from the people of the area if the Government went ahead with the move to mine mineral sand. — Staff Reporter

RSP(M) leader

killed in accident

KOTTAYAM: M.K. Prabhakaran, State committee member of RSP(M), who was hit by a motorcycle on Tuesday night, succumbed to his injuries early on Wednesday morning. He was 66. He died at the Kottayam Medical College Hospital. The cremation will be held at his house at Vazhoor at 4 p.m. on Thursday. — Staff Reporter
