THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The KPCC president, Ramesh Chennithala, on Wednesday laid out his agenda by stating that the Congress would politically take on the CPI (M), which had launched a one-year programme of agitations to counter the development programme of the Oommen Chandy Government.

He also identified taking on the National Congress (Indira) as another major challenge, though there could be some variations when compared to the one posed by the CPI (M).

Participating in a Meet-the-Press programme of the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club here, Mr. Chennithala said the CPI (M) had gone back to its earlier days of unleashing a spate of violent agitations whenever the UDF was poised to make a developmental breakthrough. The CPI (M) had launched a massive agitation when the State was ready for industrial investments in the aftermath of the Global Investor Meet. "Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan has now announced a one-year programme of agitations to counter the one-year action plan for development of the Oommen Chandy Government. We will face this politically," he said. He wanted to know the reactions of the LDF partners to this debilitating policy of the CPI (M).

He appealed to Congress workers and leaders to be prepared for any sacrifice to ensure unity in the party so that it would be equipped to take on its political enemies.

As far as he was concerned, he proposed to redress the grievances faced by any party worker. He would follow an open door policy for all those who left the party to realise their mistake and come back home.

In reply to a question on the Youth Congress attack on Congress leaders hobnobbing with caste and religious leaders, Mr. Chennithala said the organisation's criticism was only an indication of vibrancy. It was free to take an independent stand on issues. However, there was nothing wrong in leaders interacting with social and religious leadersReacting to a question of the nine MLAs supporting K. Karunakaran, he said they would not resign.
