Heavy rainfall in Gulbarga

Special Correspondent

GULBARGA: Rain-starved Gulbarga district received widespread rainfall for the first time in the season.

The rains have revived the hopes of farmers in the region to begin sowing operations on time.

The Agriculture Department has set a target to cultivate 7.56 lakh hectares in the kharif season.

According to reports reaching here on Wednesday evening, all ten taluks in the district received moderate to heavy rainfall throughout the day.

This will benefit farmers who have already completed sowing operations in around 8 per cent of the targeted area.

Other farmers can now restart sowing of red gram, the main crop of the district, from Thursday.

The rainfall data is not available, but reports said that all areas in the district recorded good rainfall.

Due to the lack of rainfall in the district, farmers were unable to start sowing cash crops such as green gram, black gram, soyabean, and sesame.

The sowing of the red gram can be taken up till the end of July and this spell of rain will ensure the early sowing of red gram.

The rainfall will also improve groundwater levels and ease the drinking water shortage in many villages that are entirely dependent on borewells for drinking water.

Many low-lying areas in the city were water logged owing to the incessant downpour since afternoon.
