KAKINADA: The Rate Payers Association has appealed to the Collector, Anil Kumar Singhal, who is also the Special Officer of the Municipal Corporation, to interact with people's representatives and elite of the city for adopting a holistic approach for tackling the civic problems. PSRK Thimmajirao, secretary, said that the association had viewed with concern on the perennial drinking water problem faced by the people of the city, mainly on account of the structural defects in the Aratlakatta reservoir, the main water source for the city water supply system.
Aratlakatta reservoir
The association had alleged that the Aratlakatta reservoir project was ill conceived and executed to serve vested interests and huge sums of money were being spent on its maintenance. It pointed out that the pipelines from the reservoir to the Victoria water works were also getting damaged disrupting water supply causing untold hardships to the people. The age-old distribution pipelines in the city have become a liability causing frequent water pollution and needed replacement, but successive municipal councils failed to take cognisance of this important aspect, the association said. It also demanded that city water supply system needed urgent attention, as seventeen surrounding villages are likely to be brought under the corporation fold sooner or later bringing pressure on the existing network.
