NEW DELHI: The monsoon's timely arrival in the Capital has brought much needed relief not only to the electricity-starved citizens but also to the power companies who were finding it extremely difficult to meet the growing demand of consumers. The drop in temperature has resulted in a decline in demand for power and, despite a shortfall in supply from external sources, the power firms can breathe easy. While the peak demand had crossed 3,600 MW last week due to a sudden rise in day temperature, widespread rain during the past couple of days has seen a decline in the demand for power. On Wednesday the peak demand stood at 3,113 MW, while on Tuesday it was 3,101 MW and Monday 3,093 MW. So, despite a shortfall of about 400 MW, mainly due to shutting down of the Nathpa Jhakri hydroelectric project in Himachal Pradesh following flash floods, load-shedding has remained comparatively low -- 21 MW on Wednesday and 14 on Tuesday. Transco and the two private power distribution companies are also breathing easy as the former has already signed an agreement with the Gujarat Government for supply of power from July 1. "As per need, Delhi will get supply of up to 300 MW from Gujarat to meet the shortfall in demand, if any. At present the situation is comfortable as the demand has come down. In July we have already arranged for 3,700 MW and in case of any crisis in the Northern Grid or other sources, we will get electricity from Gujarat," a Transco spokesperson said. Senior Transco officials say the situation at the Nathpa Jhakri plant that supplies 330 MW to Delhi would normalise as all its units would restart operations soon. Once this happens, the supply situation would improve. With the monsoon advancing, and subsequent drop in demand, the situation is expected to further ease.
