Sheila for peripheral highways

NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday emphasised the need to establish peripheral express highways so that heavy vehicles do not enter the Capital and cause pollution and congestion.

Addressing a conference of Chief Ministers -- organised by the Union Ministry of Urban Development -- Ms. Dikshit also spoke of the need to have dedicated lanes for buses, pedestrians and cycles.

Charitable hall

NEW DELHI: Delhi Finance Minister Ashok Kumar Walia on Wednesday inaugurated the Rotary Charitable Trust Hall at Preet Vihar in East Delhi.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Walia said the Rotary Club had done a lot to improve the condition of the destitute and needy besides participating actively in polio eradication programmes, blood donation camps and providing monetary help to poor students.

Chaupals inaugurated

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday inaugurated chaupals at Balmiki Colony, Regarpura, and Dev Nagar near Karol Bagh.

Ms. Dikshit said her Government was committed to the welfare of the poor living in the rural areas of the Capital. "These chaupals would cater to the social and community needs of people. Proper upkeep of the chaupals is also essential," she added.

Proposals cleared

NEW DELHI: A meeting of the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) under the chairmanship of Delhi Finance Minister A.K. Walia on Wednesday cleared two proposals of the State Transport Department and one of the Medical and Public Health Department.

The Transport Department proposals related to upgrading of the vehicle inspection unit at Burari and procurement of 1,750 catalytic converters for DTC buses, while the other proposals pertained to procurement and installation of LAN and server at Maulana Azad Medical College.
