Accused in rape

case held

Kolar: The two prime accused in the rape case at Sidlagatta recently were arrested in Bangalore on Tuesday. The accused, Amjad and Sageer Ahmed, were reportedly hiding in Mumbai in a relative's house. It was learnt that the police at Sidlagatta got in touch with Abdul Aziz, relative of the accused, and prevailed upon him to ask the accused to come to Bangalore to move their bail application. The accused arrived in Bangalore on Monday and were staying in R.T. Nagar here when the police arrested them. The accused were brought to Sidlagatta and produced before the magistrate who remanded them in judicial custody till July 11. — Correspondent

Kharge's appeal

Bangalore: The Water Resources Minister, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, has appealed to the people of Hubli-Dharwad against organising demonstrations demanding the implementation of the Kalasa Bandori Nala project to divert water from the Mahadayi river in Goa. In a statement to the press, Mr. Kharge said although the Government is eager to take up work on the project, it cannot not do so as the Union Government has halted implementation of the project. A delegation from Karnataka urged the Prime Minister to allow the project to be taken up. — Staff Reporter

Bangalore: The executive committee of the Karnataka Pradesh Youth Congress Committee has adopted a resolution requesting the party High Command to nominate R.V. Venkatesh, vice-president of the organisation, for the byelection to the vacant seat in the Legislative Council to be held on July 14. — Staff Reporter

Sub-inspector suspended

Bangalore: A Sub-inspector of Police, who joined the Police Department 30 years ago by allegedly impersonating his brother, has been placed under suspension by the Inspector-General of Police (Central Range), Shankar Mahadev Bidari. C.S. Nagaraj of Avathi village in Devanahalli taluk of Bangalore Rural district joined the department as a constable in 1974 by allegedly impersonating his younger brother, C.S. Sathyanarayana, and submitting the latter's SSLC marks card. Mr. Sathyanarayana, who was a village accountant in the Revenue Department, died on October 23, 2002. — Staff Reporter

Bangalore: The Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, H.K. Patil, on Wednesday said journalists should get their facts right. Inaugurating a seminar on "Media and society," organised by the Rotary Bangalore Central and the Karnataka Media Academy, he said the media should play an effective role in moulding public opinion. "Reports should not be biased. Mediapersons should ensure there are no mistakes in their reports, as these will lead to misunderstanding of facts," the Minister said. — Staff Reporter

Jewellery shop

burgled

Kolar: Miscreants broke open the door of a jewellery shop on Kalamma Temple Street here on Tuesday night and decamped with valuables worth over Rs. 3 lakhs. It is learnt that the culprits gained entry into the shop by cutting open the front door using gas cutters.

The owner of the shop who noticed the theft on Wednesday informed the police. — Correspondent

15-year-old girl murdered

HASSAN: A girl studying in the ninth standard was murdered, allegedly by a relative, in Chikkanayakanahalli near Gorur of Hassan taluk on Wednesday morning. According to the Gorur police, Manju of Chikkanayakanahalli wanted to marry Nandini (15), daughter of Swami Shetty. Manju's parents, who are related to Swami Shetty, tried to convince the latter to get his daughter married to their son. However Swami Shetty refused saying his daughter is a minor and he is not interested in the alliance. Manju reportedly attacked Nandini, who was going to school on Wednesday morning, with a chopper and injured her seriously. Nandini died on the way to the hospital. The Gorur police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Crushed to death

HASSAN: Rajeshwari, wife of Velumurugan, was crushed to death when a silver oak tree, which was uprooted in the heavy rainfall, fell on her on Wednesday afternoon. The Sakleshpur rural police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Man killed

BELLARY: A man in Hospet city reportedly killed his father by setting him ablaze, police said. According to the police, Khadarvali, a resident of Bhagat Singh Nagar, used to harass his family members. Unable to tolerate the harassment, Mohammed Idris, Khadarvali's son, poured petrol on his father and set fire to him. Based on a complaint filed by Khadarvali's wife, the Hospet rural police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Counselling sessions

Bidar: The Bidar Zilla Sanskritika Sangha, Bangalore, will hold counselling sessions to help students choose seats in professional colleges. Students will be introduced to the counselling sessions conducted by the Common Entrance Test Cell and provided with details about various colleges, a release from the sangha's joint secretary, Kashinath Mashetty, said.

Counselling will be conducted at the Bidar Basava Kendra on June 30 at 4 p.m. and at Basava Teertha Vidyapeetha School in Hudagi in Humnabad taluk on July 1 at 1 p.m. Those interested can contact Mashetty on 9448716548. — Staff Correspondent

Sandalwood seized

Bidar: The Bhalki police seized 3.5 kg of sandalwood valued at Rs. 3,000 that was allegedly being smuggled to Maharashtra and arrested one person in this connection. A team led by probationary sub-inspectors Sharana Gowda and Sachin Shivaputra arrested Gundappa Saibanna Vaddar of Methi Melkunda.

A case has been registered at the Bhalki rural police station.

Tree chopped

Bidar: Miscreants made away with a sandalwood tree on the Bidar Railway Station premises after chopping it down on Monday. People did not hear any noise as an electric saw was used, the Deputy Conservator of Forests said. A case has been filed at the Bidar police station.
