IAF to place Anjali under `close arrest'

Staff Reporter

`Move to ensure her presence on time for court martial proceedings'

BANGALORE: The Indian Air Force (IAF) administration on Wednesday said it will place Flying Officer Anjali Gupta under close arrest (house arrest) during the court martial proceedings to enable them to produce her on time for the proceedings after medical test at the IAF's Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM) here.

The administration, which released Ms. Gupta from close arrest on May 24, decided to detain her again as she has been arriving late for the proceedings. In a submission to the court after the jury took note of Ms. Gupta late arrival, Wg. Cdr. Nitin Dhamne, Adjutant of Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE), said that the administration will place Ms. Gupta under close arrest on the days of court martial proceedings after she reports to him at 7.45 a.m.

Every day during the proceedings, the ASTE takes Ms. Gupta to the IAM and brought back to the ASTE campus. A fitness certificate is later produced in the court.

When Ms. Gupta returned late from the medical test on an earlier occasion, the administration, on the direction of the court, issued to her a standard operating procedure (SOP, a note with instructions to be followed by her).

When she reported late on June 27, she submitted to the court that she will abide by the SOP.

But, when Ms. Gupta reported late for Wednesday's proceedings, the Presiding Officer, Gp. Capt. V. Ganesh, asked her to comply with the SOP. Ms. Gupta said that her advocate, H.B. Mishra, could not appear on Wednesday as he is suffering from hypertension and doctors have advised rest. Ms. Gupta sought two days' time. Accepting her submission, the Presiding Officer adjourned the case to Friday.
