Legislature party examines political developments, lists Government's failures

BANGALORE: With the extended budget session of the State legislature commencing on Thursday, the principal Opposition, Bharatiya Janata Party, is preparing to embarrass the State Government on issues that are confronting the farmers.

The BJP legislature party held a meeting at the official residence of the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, B.S. Yediyurappa, on Wednesday and took stock of political developments and "failures" of the coalition government on "several" fronts.

Addressing presspersons, Mr. Yediyurappa blamed the Government for the distress among farmers, imbroglio in admissions to professional courses, the naxalite menace and land scam in and around Bangalore. He said that with the erratic and delayed monsoon, the State is likely to face another drought this year. Drinking water shortage is severe in rural areas and many taluks are facing drought on account of poor execution water schemes, he said.

The BJP will convene a meeting of the leaders of the Opposition parties before the commencement of the session and formulate a strategy. The Opposition will discuss all issues by moving an adjournment motion in the Assembly, Mr. Yediyurappa said.

The Government has released Rs. 13,550 crores for planned development expenditure during the last four months. But no work has been completed. All projects have come to a standstill and the plight of the farmers continues. On account of the drought and the failure of crops, only 25 per cent of the farmers have repaid loans to cooperatives. The Government should waive the interest and the penal interest on short-, medium- and long-term loans obtained by farmers from cooperative banks till March 2006, Mr. Yediyurappa said.

The State's interest is being sacrificed by allowing Andhra Pradesh to take up "illegal" irrigation projects on the Krishna Basin. The United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre, headed by the Congress, has adopted "a compromise formula" to safeguard the water share of neighbouring State, he said.

The Government has adopted double standards on the recovery of encroached lands in and around Bangalore. The Minister for Revenue, M.P. Prakash, stated that the Revenue Department has identified 45,000 acres of land encroached by the land mafia. The former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, has spoken at length on the issue but no action has been taken so far, Mr. Yediyurappa said.

The Government issued an order to release Rs. 16.50 lakhs to each MLA to undertake development works in his or her constituency. But the funds have not been released.
