A poor show by Raje at NDC, says Congress

Chief Minister failed to protect interests of Rajasthan: PCC spokesperson

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee has accused Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje of "failing'' to protect the interests of the State at the 51st meeting of the National Development Council in Delhi. "Ms. Raje failed to forcefully place the claim of the State for its full share of water in the inter-State water projects," it said.

The chief spokesperson of the PCC, Chandrashekhar Baid, in a statement here said the Chief Minister who raised the issue of Punjab not releasing .60 million acre feet water from the total of 8.60 MAF water allocated to the State from the Indira Gandhi Canal Project at the NDC meeting had left out pending water issues with Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, besides Haryana.

"Madhya Pradesh has illegally constructed 152 anicuts on the Chambal depriving Rajasthan of 0.625 MAF of its water but there was no mention of it by Ms.Raje at NDC meeting,'' Dr.Baid charged. "This could be due to the fact that Ms.Raje has a soft corner for Madhya Pradesh, her home State,'' he noted.

Ms.Raje, in the past, had spoken of raising the issue at a national forum so that the illegal anicuts are removed or water flow to Madhya Pradesh is stopped. "This time she failed to make even a reference on the issue at the NDC,'' Dr.Baid charged.

Rajasthan was yet to get its share of water from the Narmada Project. If the State had taken the initiative to construct the canals, it could have discontinued the supply of water from the Mahi dam, in lieu of its allocated share from the Narmada, Dr.Baid pointed out.

He also faulted Ms.Raje for not raising the issue of 1.119 million cubic metre water, due to Rajasthan from the SYL canal, through the Gurgaon Feeder.
