SHIMOGA THE: Shimoga Urban Development Authority (SUDA) Chairman, N. Ramesh, has said that work on the first phase of metalling the 100-foot ring road in the city will begin within a week. He has said that the National Highways Authority, which will undertake the metalling of the road, will asphalt the road between the Usha Nursing Home and the police chowki in Vinobanagar shortly. Mr. Ramesh said the Centre has released Rs. 2 crores for the first phase of the work, for which the Minister for Public Works, H.D. Revanna, laid the foundation recently. He said that in response to the proposal made to the Government by SUDA for Rs. 9 crores for the ring road, it released Rs. 2 crores for the first phase of the work.
Second phase
Work on the second phase from police chowki to the Alkola depot and the third phase from Alkola to Mandli will be taken up depending upon the availability of funds. Mr. Ramesh said that in one year he has initiated several development works. They include distribution of 600 house sites at the Kuvempunagar Extension and improvement of infrastructure in new layouts. He said tenders have been called for the implementation of the Nidige-Machenahalli residential scheme and steps taken to provide 206 sites to the evacuees of the Upper Tunga Project. He said the development of the gardens at the Shivappa Naik Extension has been taken up at a cost of Rs. 10 lakhs. He said four bus shelters have been constructed by SUDA at the extension. Mr. Ramesh said he will resign from the post before June 30 in deference to the direction of the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh.
