Focus on regional planning of UT

The Punjab Governor and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, S.F. Rodrigues, has called for evolution of an effective mechanism for coordinated regional planning of Chandigarh

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Governor and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, S.F. Rodrigues, has called for evolution of an effective mechanism for coordinated regional planning of Chandigarh and surrounding areas falling in the adjoining states of Punjab and Haryana to ensure harmonious and balanced development of the region.

The problems of water, electricity and roads also have inter-State ramifications and regional planning is the only answer, he said while participating in the Inter-State Council meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday night.

Describing Chandigarh as the gateway to the Northern Region, Gen. Rodrigues said: "The Civil Airport urgently needs to be upgraded to the level of an international airport which could give a major boost to tourism as well as the economic growth potential of the whole region. It could also act as a regional hub to export fruits and vegetables. The Centre has already agreed, in principle, to the proposal.''

Emphasising the need for launching a widespread campaign at the National and State Level for introducing a Citizen's Charter and the Right to Information Act, he said that this could help in bringing transparency and tackling the menace of corruption.

The Chandigarh Administration had incorporated all these measures to ensure a responsive and completely accountable system. And to give good governance to the people of the Union Territory, a special project----e-Jan Sampark---had been started, which envisaged the setting up of 50 manned such Kiosks in the City to provide information relating to healthcare, Government functioning, tourism, economy.
