TDP leaders fault YSR's handling of medicos' strike

Special Correspondent

Apology sought from Minister

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party on Wednesday said the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and the Agriculture Minister, N. Raghuveera Reddy, owed an apology to the people for the way they had "mishandled" the junior doctors strike, causing inconvenience to patients.

Addressing a press conference, the TDP leaders, Kodela Sivaprasada Rao and S. Venugopala Chary, said the Government had failed to solve the muddle.

Crisis averted

But for the High Court stepping in time, the strike would have assumed dangerous proportions, they added.

They said the Chief Minister did not take any interest in resolving the crisis, which was in sharp contrast to the enthusiasm he had displayed as the Leader of Opposition.

He had rushed to extend his support even before listening to their demands. Now he has been dodging the issue, they said.

Postponement of talks

On the other hand, the Agriculture Minister kept dilly-dallying, postponing talks on the first day, conceding the demands on the second and holding out threats on the third day, they said.

They were also critical of the Government for not taking any steps to tap offshore gas reserves for the benefit of the State.

When they were told that the previous TDP Government too did not take any initiative either, they said there was no bar on the new Government in taking it up now.
