Priority for weaker sections in APCC

Special Correspondent

AICC delegates' number from State reduced from 125 to 89.

  • 53 per cent of the new executive belong to weaker sections
  • Denies any pressure exerted on him while selecting the team
  • Delegates list to be released to the PCC of AICC

    K. Kesava Rao

HYDERABAD: The APCC president, K. Keshava Rao, has described the new team of his executive as a body representing weaker sections.

The list which he submitted to the AICC general secretary in-charge of the State, Digvijay Singh, at Delhi on Tuesday was likely to be released when he would be away in the US in the next few days, he told reporters here on Wednesday.

He said 53 per cent of those figuring in the new executive were from weaker sections. He consulted all sections within the party while constituting the team. And he was satisfied with its composition.

Regretting the delay in the constitution of the body, Mr. Rao admitted that he was himself to blame for it. The selection of candidates was difficult for him as he considered every worker important. He could not leave out any one. He denied that the delay was on account of pressure mounted on him from various quarters for accommodation of workers of their choice.

As regards the selection of AICC delegates from the State, the president said it was decided to prune the number from 125 to 89. The reduction was on account of the refusal of AICC to allow 49 co-opted members as in the past. Only 11 co-opted members and 76 regular members were permitted. He himself and the Chief Minister would be the other members.

The delegates' list, which has also been finalised, would be released either to the PCC body or separately if the AICC decided so. He had suggested to the high command that MLAs and MPs not be considered as PCC office-bearers and first time MPs not included as AICC delegates.

Mr. Rao said the MLAs and other senior leaders of Khammam and Nizamabad would meet to select the presidents of their respective districts. An election for the president of Ranga Reddy district had become inevitable.
