DAVANGERE: Nine of the 13 members of the Jagalur Taluk Panchayat have moved no-confidence motion against the panchayat president, J.B. Rajeshwari, and the vice-president, S.H.Sanaulla. A letter indicating "no confidence" was signed by all nine members and submitted to the president, vice-president and the executive officer of the panchayat on June 6. They had asked the president to convene the meeting of taluk panchayat, but no action was taken on this. A delegation of the members submitted a memorandum to the Project Director of the District Urban Development Commission, Sheik Ibrahim, in this regard on Tuesday. They demanded that the executive officer be asked to hold the meeting immediately to elect a new president and vice-president. They alleged that the president, vice-president and executive officer had connived and are postponing conducting the meeting.
Letter
The Project Director has written a letter to the executive officer asking him to take appropriate steps to hold the meeting immediately. He said that in the absence of the president and vice-president, a majority of members can convene a meeting and elect new office-bearers. Vittal Shetty and Thippamma, who led the delegation, told The Hindu that a number of development works taken up by the taluk panchayat have come to a standstill owing to this delay. He added that there is an acute shortage of drinking water across the taluk and an action plan to tackle it cannot be drawn up until a meeting is convened. The panchayat should have conducted meetings at frequent intervals to chalk out steps to solve the problems of the people, they said. The seven other signatories are S.V. Jayarathnamma, Nirmala Nagaraj, Kamalamma, K.B. Manjanna, Kherunessa, Parvathamma, and K.C. Shambulingappa.
Action
The Project Director told The Hindu that the executive officer should have acted on the letter as soon as it was handed over to him by the panchayat members. The Project Director said that he has instructed the executive officer to make arrangements to hold the meeting immediately and he said that if action is not taken within reasonable time, disciplinary action will be initiated against latter.
