Mayor supports demolition drive

Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: Mangalagouri Agnihotri, Mayor of Hubli-Dharwad, said on Wednesday that there has been no opposition from her or from councillors to the demolition of encroachments.

At her last press conference as Mayor here on Wednesday, Ms. Agnihotri said that encroachments in Dharwad will be cleared in the same manner as it was done in Hubli.

"It is in the interest of the city. All the elected representatives are behind the Commissioner," she said.

Asked why she or her deputy did not visit the site of the demolitions, she said there was no need for it.

To a question, she said S.R. Morey, Minister for Municipal Administration, and Jabbar Khan Honnalli, Minister for Minorities Welfare and Youth Services, have been empowered by the councillors to decide on her successor.

She said the two leaders would take a decision after consulting the Janata Dal (S), whose support is crucial in the mayoral elections.

Ms. Agnihotri listed the work done during her tenure as Mayor.

She said all the councillors, including those of the Opposition parties, had extended cooperation to her.
