MANGALORE: Speakers at the inauguration of a workshop on the use of jute here on Wednesday said jute is the best alternative to plastic and its use should be promoted. The workshop was organised by the Karnataka State Khadi and Village Industries Board (KVIB) and the National Centre for Jute Diversification (NCJD) at the Prajna counselling centre. A.C. Bhandari, member of the KVIB, said KVIB has set aside Rs. 87 lakhs for 2005-06 to be given as margin money for those who set up jute industry in Dakshina Kannada. For those who have set up jute units in the State, the KVIB has earmarked Rs. 2.50 crores to be given as margin money. He said the KVIB has plans to provide employment to 1,250 people in the jute sector in Dakshina Kannada during this financial year. sWhereas in the State, it has been planned to provide employment to 36,383 people during the year. Shalet Pinto, Vice-President, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, stressed the importance of promoting products made of jute so that the menace of plastic could be curbed to an extent. N. Yogish Bhat, MLA, said members of self-help groups face problems in marketing products made by them. R. Srinivas, technical supervisor, Jute Service Centre, KVIB, Bangalore, said a 21-day training programme will be organised in August.
