Dharna against power project

Staff Correspondent

UDUPI: Manorama Madhwaraj, MP, said on Wednesday that the Janata Dal (Secular) is supporting a proposal to establish a coal-based power project in Udupi district despite opposition from local people.

She was addressing those who participated in a dharna organised by the Yellur Gram Panchayat, the Nandikur Janajagriti Samiti and other organisations against the proposed 1015 MW project by Nagarjuna Power Corporation Ltd. (NPCL) at Ullor in Udupi district. The dharna was held in front of the project office of NPCL at Ulloor.

Ms. Madhwaraj said it is not prudent to allow setting up of any coal-based thermal power project in the district.

The President of the Yellur Gram Panchayat, Yashwant Shetty, said NPCL is constructing buildings without permission from the gram panchayat. All illegal constructions of the company should be removed, he added.

The President of the Dakshina Kannada Parisaraskatara Okkoota, Rajiv Salian, said the okkoota will organise a rally in Udupi shortly against the proposed project. He will stage a dharna in front of the Vidhana Soudha on this issue, he added.

The President of the Nandikur Janajagriti Samiti, Lakshman Shetty, said the samiti will not allow setting up of a coal-based power project at Padubidri or its surroundings. The Kaup MLA, Lalaji Mendan; the zilla panchayat member, Gladys Almeida; the Udupi Taluk Panchayat members, Naveenchandra Shetty, A.K. Sulaiman, and Katapady Shankar Poojary; the President of the Padubidri Gram Panchayat, Nethravati Shetty; the President of the Dakshina Kannada Fish Marketing Federation, Gangadhar Suvarna, and the President of the Udupi taluk unit of the okkoota, Premananda Kalmady, were present.
