Special Correspondent

Changes are youth-oriented, says official

  • Western music session on Friday extended
  • `Krishiranga' programme recast

MANGALORE: All India Radio, Mangalore, will bring in changes in its repertoire from July 2, according to the Programme Executive, Vasanth Kumar Perla.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Dr. Perla said the changes are youth-oriented.

To begin with, AIR, Mangalore, will include "FM radio culture" that includes anchoring, chat shows, and emphasis will be on music and mixing.

Dr. Perla said Western music will be aired in a big way with two sessions which will also be anchored by young talent.

The concept of chat shows will be part of the programme in which connoisseurs of Western music will give their opinion and talks, and also interact with listeners. The Western music session on Friday has been extended from 30 to 45 minutes between 9.15 p.m. and 10 p.m., while on Wednesday, it will be between 8 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. For senior listeners, AIR has decided to air Western classical music on third and fifth Friday of the month. The programme on Western music will commence on July 1.

Dr. Perla said the changes centre around the "weekend listening pleasure" of the audience. The "Krishiranga" programme has been recast which will have more information, success stories, news and current affairs pertaining to agriculture and farming.

Asked if these changes will extend the transmission hours, Dr. Perla said the existing timings 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., 12.30 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. to 11.05 p.m. will continue. AIR, Mangalore, is a single channel transmission centre and the timings will not be extended until it is converted into a multi-channel station.
