DRC seeks steps to stop Babli works

Staff Reporter

ADILABAD: The Adilabad District Review Committee (DRC) on Wednesday unanimously resolved to urge the State Government to take steps to stop works on the controversial Babli project on the Godavari.

The project is coming up on the river in Bhokar taluka of Nanded district in Maharashtra about 15 km from Basar and within the Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP) basin. Moving the resolution, the Adilabad MP, T. Madhusudan Reddy, said the Babli and 11 other projects coming up at a distance of 20 km each on the Godavari would curtail inflows into the SRSP. This would render the irrigated agriculture lands in Telangana dry, he contended.

Delegation to YSR

The Nirmal MLA, A. Indrakaran Reddy, said a delegation of MLAs from the district met the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, recently on the issue. The Chief Minister had promised to take every step to get the project stopped, he claimed.

During review of agriculture in the district, the Adilabad MLA, C. Ramchander Reddy, wanted settlement of crop insurance claims of farmers who had suffered crop damage due to natural calamities in the last two years.

He said farmers whose claims had not been settled were finding it difficult to raise crop loans from banks too.

Charge levelled

The Asifabad MLA, A. Sridevi, charged that relief had been provided by the administration to benami farmers in Bheemini mandal. Money had been given to persons who did not own any land but claimed to have suffered losses due to natural calamities.

The Social Welfare Minister and district in charge, D.S. Redya Naik, instructed officials to verify the allegation of the Asifabad MLA. He also asked the Agriculture Department officials to look into insurance claim settlement.

The Labour Minister, G. Vinod, the zilla parishad chairman, Lolam Shamsunder, the MLAs -- Narayan Rao Patel (Mudhole), Soyam Bapu Rao (Boath), N. Diwakar Rao (Luxettipet) and A. Govind Naik (Khanapur) -- the Collector, R. Subba Rao, and the Joint Collector, A. Dinakar Babu, were also present.
