Modern technology `should be harnessed to benefit all'

Temper technological push with ethical pull: M.S. Swaminathan

CHENNAI: Technological advancements should go along with an understanding that human welfare is paramount and technological push should be tempered with ethical and ecological pulls, Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, chairman, M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, said.

Though nuclear threats still dogged the world, the emergence of bio-terrorism was even more dangerous and modern technology such as material nanotechnology, nanosciences and biotechnology should be harnessed only to benefit all people, he said while inaugurating the sixth national postgraduate students convention of the Federation of Operative Dentistry of India (FODI) and Indian Endodontic Society at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute here on Saturday.

"Advances in information and communication technology have leapfrogged over the past 15 years mostly due to sophisticated instrumentation though it has created apprehensions about bio security and the ecology.

The MSSRF has developed a Mission 2007 project to ensure that balanced diet and access to safe drinking water are available to all, apart from developing a grid of village knowledge centres," he added.
