A SHOW OF PROTEST: Shanmugam Road at West Tambaram wears a deserted look on Wednesday. Photo: K. Manikandan
TAMBARAM: Traders in Tambaram closed their shops for two hours on Wednesday to protest against what they called the high-handedness by the Tambaram Municipality in its anti-encroachment eviction drive. The shops downed their shutters between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. The traders said the Municipality could have resorted to regulation of shops instead of going on such a massive eviction drive. They took part in a procession from Shanmugham Road and gathered on the Tambaram Municipality premises where a section of them spoke to authorities. Officials told them that the drive was being carried out following court orders and instructions from the State Government. Encroachments had literally taken over the roads in Tambaram. Vendors who once opened their baskets and sold their merchandise on the pavements, now boast pucca structures. In the absence of any government or municipal action over the years, every inch of available space, particularly on Shanmugham Road and the service road adjourning GST Road, had been usurped. It was only recently the municipality decided to take action against the encroachments following court orders and instructions from the Municipal Administration Department.
