Sethu project: NGO objects to DMK's "insinuation"

Special Correspondent

"Criticism ignores reality that project is unsustainable"

CHENNAI: The NGO, Coastal Action Network, has condemned DMK president M. Karunanidhi's "insinuation" that the writ petition filed in the Madras High Court against the implementation of the Sethusamudram ship canal project was motivated.

Jesu Rathinam, CAN convener said on Wednesday: "Accusations that people opposed to the project are acting on behalf of vested interests in Sri Lanka or insinuations that we are pawns in murky regional politics ignore the reality that the project is unfeasible economically and unsustainable ecologically.

"We had petitioned the court to stay only the public hearings until a comprehensive environmental impact assessment was completed.

"We had never gone to the court with the prayer to stop the project."
