COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation said on Wednesday that none of its 2,457 sanitary workers was involved in manual removal of night soil or cleaning of toilets. The workers also got salary on par with their counterparts in other urban local bodies. The civic body said in a press release that all dry latrines had been replaced with flush out toilets. For the poor and slum dwellers, community toilets had been provided in all the 72 wards of the Corporation.
Sullage lorries
These were either connected to the underground drainage or had septic tanks. The tanks were cleared of night soil by mechanical flushing by four sullage lorries operating in the four zones of the Corporation. Under the Corporation's municipal solid waste management plan plastic bins and pushcarts would be provided for door-to-door collection of garbage. All the sanitary workers were provided with protective gear such as gloves, masks, gumboots, raincoats, uniform, sandals and also carbolic soap.
