THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The supply of drinking water to Kumarapuram and adjoining areas continues to be totally disrupted and the supply to the Medical College Hospital (MCH) partially so for the second day on Wednesday as the 400 mm line that services the areas developed a leak near Kuravankonam this evening.

Supply disrupted

Water supply to areas such as Marappalam, Kuravankonam and Kesavadasapuram was also disrupted on account of the leak.

The pipeline originates at the Peroorkada reservoir and goes via Kowdiar and Kuravankonam to Marappalam and Pattom. From there the line cuts across the main road and goes via Pottakkuzhy and Kumarapuram to the MCH.

It was a joint leak on the line near Pottakkuzhy junction that forced the shut down of water supply to Kumarapuram and the MCH on Tuesday morning.

The supply to the MCH was only partially hit. It is serviced by another line coming from Ulloor.Though the repair work at Pottakkuzhy was scheduled to be over Wednesday morning it got delayed as workers found it difficult to remove the damaged section of the line through the web of power lines, telephone cables and domestic water lines above the main line.

Repair work

When the repair work finally got over at about 2.30 p.m. and the line partially charged, it was noticed that the pressure in the line was not what it ought to have been.

Eventually, it was discovered that the same line had burst at a point on the Kowdiar-Kuravankonam road.

According to K. Sasi, executive engineer of Kerala Water Authority, the area where the leak was detected was cordoned off immediately and workers began digging up the road to identify the leak.

"We expect to complete the repair work at Kuravankonam latest by Thursday morning and normal supply in the line will be restored by noon," he said.
