BANGALORE: The Commissioner of Police, Ajai Kumar Singh, on Wednesday modified his June 22 order prohibiting private vehicles from dropping children in a radius of 200 metres around 16 schools in the city. According to the new order, the ban on private vehicles dropping children in a radius of 200 metres around the schools will be applicable only to five schools: Sofia School on Palace Road, Baldwin Boys School on Hosur Road, Baldwin Girls School on Richmond Road, Bishop Cotton Girls School on St. Mark's Road and Kendriya Vidyalaya on Victoria Road. According to a press release from Dr. Ajai Kumar Singh, the order, which will come into force from Friday, will be enforced on a trial basis around these schools. In regard to 11 schools listed in the earlier order, some preparatory work such as hiring buses and identifying routes is being done, the release said. Parents of children studying in some of these schools on Tuesday had staged a demonstration in protest against the Commissioner's order. Holding placards with slogans such as, "I am more concerned than the traffic police for the safety of my child," the group of parents argued that sending children by buses to schools would not reduce the traffic congestion. Parents had also expressed concern over the safety record of BMTC buses. Quoting recent media reports, they said bus accidents were increasing and thus buses would not be a safe option for children. Some of them had even said that they were going to challenge the order judicially.
