HYDERABAD: The State Government has decided to open extension centres and mini campuses of Osmania University in the Gulf and Middle-East regions to enable children of Non Resident Indians (NRI) pursue under-graduate and post-graduate courses in engineering, management, science and technology, according to the Information and Public Relations Minister, Mohd. Ali Shabbir. The courses would be offered in the distance education mode and the university's executive council had agreed to make suitable amendments to the existing rules to make way for the extension centres and mini campuses there. In a statement here on Wednesday, the Minister said the move was given the green signal in view of the representations made by NRIs from all over the Middle-East, for better education facilities to their wards. There were similar representations from various educational institutions there and also students. "The schools there offer CBSE syllabus till the 12th standard, but there are no adequate opportunities for higher education thereon," he pointed out. There were 600 foreign students pursuing under-graduate and post-graduate courses of Osmania University in Hyderabad itself, indicating the popularity of the courses, and the number was increasing every year.
