VIJAYAWADA: The joint director of agriculture, S. Jagadeeswara Reddy, on Wednesday called on private and non-government organisations to take part in welfare activities with a special focus on rural areas. Mr. Reddy was the chief guest at the `Pratibha' scholarship distribution programme organised by the Godavari Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited (GFCL) at Nunna Zilla Parishad High School here. The GFCL distributed a scholarship of Rs.3,000 each to 100 girl students who are pursuing SSC in 50 Zilla Parishad high schools in the district. The girls were selected based on their merit in class IX examination. Mr. Reddy lauded the efforts of the GFCL for encouraging education in rural areas and choosing the district for distributing merit scholarships. He said that it was the time for encouraging rural children, girls in particular, in education. The marketing manager of GFCL, N. Gopichand, said that the company was conducting awareness campaigns in villages to enlighten farmers on the selection of crops and better marketing opportunities. To encourage women's education, the company had introduced `Pratibha' scholarships in six districts this year and selected girl students from the ZP high schools, he added. Munnangi Lavanya and Vakati Durga Bhavani of the Nunna high school, P. Saleema and M. Vanaja of Gannavaram, Rasheela and Sheik Bibi of Veerulapadu, Sailakshmi and J. Balamma of Telaprolu and K. Jyothi nad Shakiya of Atkur Zilla Parishad high school received the scholarships.
