Commodity prices

The following were the prices (in rupees per kg) of essential commodities in the local wholesale market on Wednesday: Groundnut oil - 50.50, palmolein oil - 39.75, sunflower oil - 48, tamarind (flower variety) - 22 to 29, tamarind (karipuli variety) - 44 to 48, chillies (new) - 10 to 15, rice (2716) - 13.50, rice (superfine) - 15, rice (sona masoori) - 17 to 19, rice (samba masoori) - 16 to 18, black gram - 27 to 28.50, red gram - 26.30 to 31.50.

Vikas Gora for

humanist meet

Vikas Gora of Atheist Centre will participate in the 16th World Humanist Congress to be held in Paris from July 4. The four-day conference will be organised jointly by the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) and Libre Pensee Francaise. Mr. Vikas Gora will speak on "Poverty, Population and Sustainable Development from the Humanist Perspective." He will also participate in the International Humanist and Ethical Youth Organisation (IHEYO) conference on "Multiculturalism,'' which will be held in Paris from July 8 to 15.

Awareness meet

The Vijayawada branch of the Southern India Regional Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) will conduct an awareness meeting on chartered accountancy course and civil services examinations here on July 1. The meeting will be held at the ICAI office in Ammana Towers on Prakasam Road in which the civil services topper from the city, M. Tulasi, will interact with the students.

CPI(M) dharna

Muslim women under the aegis of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), on Wednesday, staged a dharna a site belonging to the Wakf Board in Nidamanuru and pitched party flags. They demanded that the government divide the plot into house sites and distribute them to the poor. The district secretary of the CPI(M), V. Uma Maheswara Rao, the district secretariat member, Y. Kesava Rao and others were present.

DD programme

for farmers

Doordarshan, Vijayawada, which had commenced narrowcasting transmission for the benefit of farmers from January 1 this year, has decided to extend the programme to other Doordarshan transmitters of Machilipatnam, Nellore, Kavali and Ongole.

In a statement on Wednesday, the station engineer of the Doordarshan Kendra, Vijayawada, Ch. Subbarao, said the transmission would be launched on the above-mentioned transmitters from July 1.
