CHENNAI: An idle mind is the devil's workshop, goes the saying. In an attempt to keep them busy and help them pick up some useful skills, the police are enlisting youngsters aged 12-18 years in Mogappair for free karate classes.

Over a year ago the police organised a free sports camp for the residents. The focus then shifted to the martial arts, which attracted children in large numbers. So far, 200 boys and girls — from the poorer sections — have received training, says C. Sylendra Babu, Joint Commissioner of Police, who initiated the programme.

The karate classes were conducted in May and after the schools reopened classes are held over weekends. Police commandos, supervised by Sensei N. Mohan, karate master and general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Karate Association, conduct the classes.

Besides learning the art of self-defence, the participants receive free nutritive food items, a big attraction for the trainees.

A few housewives have also joined the martial arts camps. They are being trained by women police commandos.
