Rajeev Taranath, Y.K. Muddukrishna and N. Prabhudeva among winners

Kempe Gowda awards announced; auto driver R. Murthy's services recognised

BANGALORE: The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) has chosen sarod player Rajeev Taranath, the director of the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology, N. Prabhudeva, singer and KAS official Y.K. Muddukrishna, an autorickshaw driver R. Murthy, a retired pourakarmika Gangamma and 23 others for the Kempe Gowda awards for 2005-2006.

The Central Crime Branch team that shot dead Syed Nasru against whom there were 50 criminal cases in an encounter recently has also been chosen for the award.

The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, will present the awards at a function on Friday.

Unlike in the last year, this time the award carries a cash prize of Rs. 20,000, a memento worth Rs. 5,000, a citation and a shawl.

The following is the list of award winners: Rajeev Taranath (music), N. Prabhudeva (medical), G.V. Diwakar (medical), R.K. Saroja (medical), R. Nagesh (amateur theatre), Rajashaileshchandra Gupta (journalism), G.M. Shirahatti (electronic media), B.L. Lakkegowda (administration - education), Y.K. Muddukrishna (administration), Khaleel-ur-Rehaman (Literature), Ki. Ram. Nagaraj (teaching), Agrahara Krishnamurthy (administration - education), Manu P. Baligar (literature), Gangamma (social service), Chikkanarasappa (folk art), Banamdoor Kempaiah (folk music), Vemgal Narayanaswamy (folk music), M. Kodandaram (nadaswaram), M.R. Satyanarayana (gamaki), Vishwamoorthachar (sculpture), R. Murthy (social service - honest autorickshaw driver), P.Y. Rajendra Kumar (library), Y.K. Venkatesh (sports), N. Shobha (sports), Pramila Joshai (film) and the Central Crime Branch team that shot dead Syed Nasru.

Addressing presspersons after announcing the names of the award winners, the Mayor, R. Narayanaswamy, said the BMP had set up a committee comprising writers Chandrashekar Kambara, K.S. Nisar Ahmed and L. Hanumanthaiah, to select the award winners.

"We have not interfered in the selection process and the award winners have been chosen on merit. Unlike in the past the number of award winners will not increase on the final day. We respect the committee's decision," he said. To queries, the Commissioner, K. Jothiramalingam, said Rs. 60 lakhs had been earmarked in the BMP budget for 2005-2006 for the Kempe Gowda Day celebrations. Each ward had been allotted Rs. 50,000 (Rs. 20,000 more than last year) for organising the celebrations, he added. The civic body has made arrangements for the celebrations this year. A pandal to accommodate over 2,000 persons has been put up behind the BMP head office. Posters and banners on the celebrations with photos of the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor, N. Shantakumari, have been put up in the city.

On Thursday, teams of corporators will lead processions carrying the Kempe Gowda Jyothi from the four towers at Lalbagh, Kempambudhi Lake, Ulsoor Lake and Ramanashree Park near Mehkri Circle. The teams will then meet at the BMP head office.

The main function will be held on Friday when the corporators will present entertainment programmes before the Chief Minister will give away the awards.
