This Day That Age
Rosewall, the young Australian stylist, who was strongly fancied to qualify for the finals of the men's singles in the Wimbledon tennis championships, was on June 29 unexpectedly defeated in the semi-finals by Nielsen, at 11-9, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. The latter, thus, entered the finals for the second time in three years. He had lost to Seixas in the finals in 1953. Everything before the match had pointed to a comfortable victory for Rosewall. He had easily defeated Davidsson, the foremost European player, in the quarter-finals. On the other hand, Nielsen had been taken to five sets by Pietrangeli, the Italian.
