Trader receives threatening calls from the accused

  • Accused threatened trader in the name of Suri's follower
  • Packet containing ransom money to the tune of Rs. 70,000 seized
  • Accused held by police when he came to collect ransom money

ANANTAPUR: The One Town police of Anantapur on Thursday arrested G. Kalyana Chakravarthi, son of the Telugu Desam Party leader and former chairperson of the DCCB, G.C. Ramanna Chowdary, on the charge of extortion from a trader in the name of Suri's followers.

On a tip-off provided by the trader, one Shamsher Ahmed of J.K. Marketing in Kamalanagar, the police caught Kalyana Chakravarthi red-handed near Nadimi Vanka on Wednesday night.

The police also seized a packet containing Rs. 70,000 cash, the ransom given by the trader. The trader was getting threatening calls in the name of Suri's follower in the recent weeks and the caller was demanding money. The caller had warned him of dire consequences including threat to his life, if he failed to pay the ransom. The trader approached the police and as per their instructions agreed to the caller's demand to pay the ransom.

Accordingly, the trader had kept the money wrapped in a packet in a place specified by the caller as the police lay in wait. The police caught Kalyana Chakravarthi when he arrived in at the place where the trader had kept the ransom.

Meanwhile, in a similar incident, a few persons from Baddalapuram village claiming to be the followers of Suri had allegedly threatened Najunda Swamy and Ananda Rao to vacate 15 cents land in Suryanagar, as they had purchased it.

They told newspersons here on Thursday that the police had refused to help them when approached.

The persons who were forcing them to vacate their legal property had created registration papers claiming that they had purchased the piece of land at a cost of Rs. 60 lakhs from the kin of Nanjunda Swamy and Ananda Rao.

The duo stated that about 1.25 cents of land was in legal dispute with their kin.
