Staff Reporter

NAGERCOIL: The Government has decided to construct 2,450 houses for the tsunami-hit fishermen in the district, said the Collector, Sunil Paliwal.

Speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, he said that the district administration had handed over 53 acres of land, out of 72 acres needed, to non-governmental organisations to construct permanent houses.

It had identified another 15.5 acres of land and steps had been taken to identify the remaining 3.5 acres of land.

The Matha Amirthanandha Mayee Trust had started its housing project in the coastal areas.

It had decided to construct 50 houses at Singaravelan Colony, Parapattu, Vettumadai, Kootumangalam and Sambasivapuram near Colachel.

It had sent a proposal, at an outlay of Rs.38 crores, for maintenance of roads affected by tsunami.

But the Government had allotted Rs.19 crores to repair roads.

A sum of Rs.10 crores was needed to repair village panchayats, special grade village panchayats, panchayat unions and Colachel municipal areas.

Meanwhile, the Government had allotted Rs. 9 crores for construction of a temporary bridge at Manakudi for the benefit of fishermen belonging to both Keela and Mela Manakudi areas.
