PONDICHERRY: Director of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) K. S. V. K. Subba Rao has said "stroke is a major health problem the world over, accounting for the second major [next to coronary disease] cause of death and the first major cause of disability in adults." Addressing a meeting organised on the occasion of World Stroke Day in JIPMER recently, the Director said that the institute became one of the few colleges in the world to observe the first World Stroke Day. JIPMER medical superintendent A. K. Das read out the salient features of the world stroke day from the original proclamation and said that there was need for improving awareness about stroke and facilities for stroke care in the country. There should also be awareness about preventive strategies for heart disease and cancer as well, he added. Mr. Das distributed certificates to winners of the essay competition conducted by the institute on the theme "Why stroke care is lagging behind coronary care, suggestions and solutions." A release from the institute said that the meeting was organised jointly by the Department of Neurology Medicine and Preventive Medicine and the Pondicherry branch of Indian Epilepsy Association. Head of the Department of Neurology Sunil K. Narayanan welcomed those present and highlighted the evolution of the concept of World Stroke Day. Members of the National Service Scheme (NSS), who had taken part in a door-to-door survey on neuro- epidemiology in five localities of Pondicherry, were felicitated on the occasion. A programme on "stroke update" was also held as part of the meeting. Deliberations revolved round the topics covering various aspects of stroke management, such as acute stroke care including thrombolytic therapy, neuro-protective therapy in stroke, diabetes and stroke, post stroke domiciliary stroke care and primary and secondary stroke prevention.
