Letters to the Editor
The report "Nixon called Indira Gandhi an old witch" (June 30) makes disturbing reading. While it is reflective of Richard Nixon's mindset, Henry Kissinger's remark "The Indians are bastards anyway" speaks volumes of his nature. New Delhi should register its protest with the U.S. for the derogatory terms used by its leaders to describe the people of a nation.
Looks like the remarks of the former U.S. President and his National Security Advisor were triggered by their failure to persuade Indira Gandhi to toe the U.S. line on Pakistan in the run-up to the 1971 war.
The transcripts of Oval Office tapes and new declassified documents show that the White House had little sympathy for India's concerns over the carnage in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).
