GULBARGA: Members of the Karnataka Pranta Raitha Sangha on Thursday demanded that the State Government extend the last date to repay crop loans to March 2006 to help farmers to avail themselves of interest waiver.
Dharna
The protesters led by the president of the sangha, Maruti Manpade, and other office-bearers including the district unit president, Megharaj Khatare, the secretary, Chennappa Anegundi, and the joint secretary, Virupakshappa Tadkal, staged a day-long dharna in front of the Gulbarga District Cooperative Credit Bank stating that the last date fixed by the Government for the repayment of crop loans, which happened to be Thursday, does not give farmers enough time to raise money to clear the loans. The State Government, taking into account the increasing number of suicides by farmers burdened by loans, decided to waive the interest on crop loans provided the principal amount is repaid, the sangha said and added that this intention of the Government will be defeated if farmers are not provided enough time to repay the principal amount. Farmers are finding it difficult to mobilise funds to take up sowing and are not in a position to repay their loans. Mr. Manpade said the State committee of the sangha, which met in Bangalore on June 27, decided to urge the Government to extend the deadline to repay the principal amount to March 2006.
