AAI to introduce intranet facility in 33 airports

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: In an effort to introduce Information Technology (IT) at airports, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will connect 33 airports in the country, including Bajpe airport here, with intranet facility by March 2006. This is a move aimed at increasing the efficiency in the administration of airports according to K. Ramalingam, Regional Executive Director, Airports Authority of India, Southern Region, Chennai.

Speaking to presspersons at the Bajpe airport on Thursday he said the AAI is working on the implementation of intranet facility at airports. Once the facility is commissioned it would speed up communication with the corporate headquarters of the AAI and between airports.

Dr. Ramalingam took over as the Regional Executive Director of Southern Region at Chennai recently. Earlier he was the Executive Director (Information Technology), AAI, Delhi.

In the Southern Region besides Bajpe, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Calicut, Coimbatore, Trichy and Madurai airports will be provided with intranet facility.

He said that the AAI was also working on the introduction of videoconference facility at 19 major airports. This facility is available only at Chennai airport now. With this facility the selected airports would be connected with the corporate headquarters of the AAI. It is likely to be commissioned by March 2006. He said, if the intranet facility is connected with the AAI website, passengers can obtain flight schedules at different airports by logging on to the website.
