Seventh pay revision panel submits report

Hike likely in payscales for Andhra Pradesh Government staff

HYDERABAD: The Seventh Pay Revision Commission, headed by J. Rambabu, submitted its report on the revision of salaries covering over 10 lakh State Government employees in Andhra Pradesh, to the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, here on Thursday.

The 1,500-page report, whose contents were not revealed, is reported to have recommended an increase in payscales by merging dearness allowance with the basic pay. The Government is already paying interim relief at 8.5 per cent.

Scrutiny of report

P. Ramakantha Reddy, principal secretary, Finance, told reporters that his department would scrutinise the report before making its recommendations to the Government. The Chief Minister is likely to introduce the subject at the Cabinet meeting on Friday, but on the PRC report it may take some more time.

Mr Rambabu said he had done his work and it was up to the Government to implement the recommendations.

Receiving the report, Dr. Reddy reportedly referred to the representations he had received from service organisations and to the formula to be adopted for revising the payscales as done by the Central Pay Revision Commissions.

Staff restive

The service organisations were apprehensive about the contents of the PRC's report and some became restive. G. Kurma Rao, secretary general, secretariat employees' coordination committee, who thronged the Chief Minister's office along with scores of officer-bearers in a bid to know the contents of the report, demanded a 40 per cent hike, compared with 30 per cent sought by the Joint Action Committee of Employees, Teachers and Workers.

The Telugu Desam Government had given a 25 per cent hike under the Sixth PRC. Further, the per capita income in the State had gone up by 44 per cent since 1999.

They would go on launch an agitation if the revision was restricted to 12 per cent as was widely believed, he said.
