Reduce tax on petrol, CPI(M) urges Govt.

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) State Committee on Thursday urged the State Government to reduce sales tax to balance the rise in petroleum prices or roll back bus fares.

Nagaraj, CPI(M) State general secretary, briefed presspersons about the resolutions passed by the State Committee at its meeting on June 25 and 26. He said neighbouring States such as Andhra Pradesh had reduced their sales tax to balance the increase in petroleum prices and the price there is Rs. 1.90 lower than the fuel price in Karnataka.

Mr. Nagaraj criticised the State Government for its failure to solve the admissions imbroglio and stressed the need to enact a Central law. He said the CPI(M) State Committee is of the opinion that teaching English at an early age is not advisable. Preference should be given to the mother tongue. The party's State Committee member Sriram Reddy urged the coalition to stop fighting over "frivolous" things and unite to provide governance for the welfare of the people. The responsibility to keep the communal forces at bay was both on the Congress as well as the Janata Dal (Secular), he said.
